Background
Accurately identifying and managing climate- and nature-related risks still remains a challenge for investors, yet increasing reputational scrutiny, stakeholder pressure and a greater understanding of the interconnectedness of risks mean that human rights due diligence has already become the next frontier for the financial industry. Emerging frameworks (e.g. TISFD) and best practice approaches, including from the UNPRI, highlight the significance of accurately assessing social risks.
However, investors need the tools to confidently identify the civil, political and labour rights or human security risks in their portfolios – where these risks are most salient and which companies and assets are most affected. Drawing on our Asset Risk Exposure Analytics (AREA), we discuss how assessing human rights risk exposure at the asset level across the public equity universe addresses a longstanding gap in granular, comprehensive human rights due diligence, empowering investors and banks to make more informed investment and lending decisions, engage more effectively with corporates, and meet reporting requirements.
